Ever wondered why guys shout weird names missing to their team-mates? Well, wonder no more. The first E-newsletter coverage will be on the growing popular game Defense of the Ancients or “DotA” for short. The game is a free mod for the popular Real Time Strategy game Warcraft3: The Frozen Throne. “DotA” is played on a PC platform.

The objective of this mod game is to destroy your opponent’s Ancient (Ancient is the term used in DotA for buildings) which is located deep in both bases. There are two sides for one to choose from. The “Scourge “and the “Sentinel “side with a maximum of 5 players each from both sides. Joining different sides will give one access to the many different heroes available on that particular side. Currently there are 10 item shops for the player to purchase their items of choice. Once the game has started, the host of the game (which usually is the player in blue color) will choose the modes preferred for the game (there are currently 17 modes available).

Upon selection a hero of your choice, you will be given a small amount of money (referred to as gold in game) for you to spend on equips and items of your choice. Each player will generate a small amount of gold as the game progresses. Eliminating or killing enemy heroes and units will earn you additional gold which can be used to purchase better equips. However, dying will make you lose a portion of your gold and that is why, careful planning will be required when playing the game. Upon death, you will be teleported back to your base over a period of time.

Each base has a fountain, which helps your hero regenerate your HitPoints (HP) and Mana Points (MP) at an amazing rate. HP indicates the health of your hero while MP indicates the capacity to cast your abilities. Every hero has limited amount if HP and MP. Each hero will have 4 different abilities or skills which will prove useful when engaging enemy heroes. The game gets strategic when equipments come to use. At a time, a Hero can carry only 6 equips. Now comes the strategic part, every equipment is different and has it’s own uniqueness. You will decide which equip combination best suits your hero and it’s ability.? There are nearly 48 combinational equips and over 50 independent equips. Well, that’s almost all about the basics. On with the hero selections, each hero starts at level 1 and can be increased to a maximum of level of 25 over the time.

Heroes level up by gaining experience when killing opponent’s creeps or heroes. There are three basic stats for every hero namely Strength, Agility and Intelligence. Each of these stats has its own basic purpose and every hero has one of these stats as their main attribute. Note that equips too also boost these stats. With proper coordination, tactics and combinations, you will find DotA an adrenaline paced game.

DoTA sucks Saturday, 16 September 2006 - Written by KOG Ive played it, Ive seen those people like know what items to buy, and where to go. Ive played it with my friend, ive had him try to make me play it more, and I can conclude that it is fun, and involves memorizing where to go, and what spells to use in what order, but if you're going to try to say that DoTA takes skill, then you should actually learn to play.
