Beware: spoilers ahead
The hype for the Golden Compass and the long advertising period with its trailers (since months ago) made me catch the movie once it came on the screens. The trailer promises so much, but the movie itself delivers so little. There wasn't an intense climax, unlike its other epic counterparts (Chronicles of Narnia, etc) and there was really only minimal fighting. The fighting scene between the polar bears was also brief -- feels a little "touch-and-go". The final fighting scene when the kids were escaping was also not really very exciting. The front part made us anticipate the fight put up by the flying witches, but when the witches came out, I wasn?t overwhelmed by the battle. Commendable effort but not super fantastic. Maybe my expectations are too high, but I have friends who agree that the movie wasn?t exactly what we expected. Having not read the novel by Philip Pullman, I don't feel right to be in the position to comment about the adaptation though at some parts I feel a little bewildered, e.g. at how a polar bear can hide its armour when not in use (the scene after he fought the king). Inside the show, Nicole Kidman also wasn't given a heavy role and I wonder if she is even going to appear in the sequel? I guess part of the hype about this movie was also 'cos of Nicole Kidman? Well, at least I thought she would deliver a better performance in this movie, with a more substantial role. Contrasting to her forceful character at the beginning of the show, she easily fainted towards the end, which was quite disappointing to me. I felt that any actress could play her role as Lyra's mother. Despite the disappointment in this fantasy movie, at least I was happy to hear Ian McKellen?s voice as the voice of the polar bear, Iorek. As the adventure of Lyra and her golden compass continues when she saves her birth father, I certainly hope the sequel brings us something better.
