I watched "Beauty World" at the Esplanade on Friday evening and thought it was pretty good. The following is my impression of the musical:
I have never watched the 1988 and 1998 version, so I cannot make any comparisons. But it definitely gave me a good time because the story was simple to understand and the entire musical was filled with light-hearted (albeit corny) humour. For those who went, I am sure you all found the "Ah..ah..ha.. Ivy, I love you" song highly corny yet funny, memorable and yet after a while, mildly irritating (lol). I also find the songs very enjoyable. Once again, this underlines Dick Lee's musical prowess.
In terms of the cast, they were all competent but for me, a few of them stood out just that bit more. Irene Ang, though not the lead, stole the show with her excellent rendition of the kaypoh cleaner "Wan-Choo". Show stealer! I also thought "Project Superstar II" champion, Daren Tan did an excellent in playing the "tough but have a special soft spot for Ivy" Ah Hock, the Beauty World bouncer. He was totally believable as the tough-talking local gangster cum Ah Beng - no wonder he was champion. Finally, I also thought Denise Tan did a fantastic job of playing the "number 1 cabaret girl of Beauty World", Lulu. Man-eater, unscrupulous schemer, sultry temptress, super-bitch - she exhibited all of Lulu's traits to near-perfection.
The only gripe is the musical ended somewhat abruptly, for me at least. But other than that, I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Therefore to sum up, I think Beauty World is an enjoyable, light-hearted and entertaining musical which you can consider if you are looking for a good time. For details, check out here.
