This movie (R-rated) is the best zombie / bio-hazard movie ever made. I made this claim after having watched the first part, Resident Evil 1 & 2, Doom, and having played the game Half-life. The zombies in 28 series are different from the traditional zombies. They are fast, furious and bloodthirsty, making them more horrifying.
28 Weeks Later is a combination of Resident Evil + Crash. It touches a lot on humanity, conflicts of personalities. Different characters have different concerns of their own. They couldn't seem to communicate well to let other people understand their concern.
We all make mistakes. The mistakes in the movie are the deadliest, born of innocence, justified by good intentions. In the end the safety of everything is jeopardized by these mistakes. It took Singapore several months to contain SARS. The director tried to tell us, although human are wise creatures, they still could not contain Rage due to certain reasons.
Bad thing about this movie is that, the camera view could make you nauseous sometimes.
Background
I've read a book about bio-safety level 4 viruses before, therefore I know the director has done enough research to create the hypothetical virus - Rage which is responsible for turning people into zombies. The virus in the movie although is largely imaginary, they still can make people feel that one day it might become true.
Ebola, a deadly virus which is the cause of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever is not air-borne. It spreads from person to person. Outbreak in Africa killed thousands of people. The Africans got infected because according to their religious custom, they kissed the dead during funeral and the virus transmitted though contact with body fluid.
The difference is Rage has no incubation period (not possible in real life, but that creates dramatic effect in movie), people turn into zombie a few seconds after being infected. It has 100% mortality rate.
A minority of people is born to be resistant to a virus. Research can be done with their help to invent antibodies or even a cure. The movie is largely based on these medical facts.
Critics
I saw some critics who rated the movie bad. One of them is a military officer, he is not satisfied by the portrayal of military in the movie. Some interesting facts are he actually admitted that the military supports using drastic measure to contain such a virus, including exterminating every living life in an identified risk group which may also contain innocent poeple and using deadly weapon like chemical agents or nuclear bombs to attack them.
Another critics think that everything in the world can be under control. The security maintained by American soldiers is always perfect, and therefore the lax in security causes big troubles story in the movie is unbelievable.
