The latest Cineplex opens in Ang Mo Kio over the Weekend! And its CATHAY, now in AMK HUB!!! How good is it? How bad it is? Here I am with my two cents worth after catching a movie there yesterday.
Cathay @ AMK Hub is on level four. basically, its sales counter doubles up as the snacks counter or rather the snacks counter doubles up as the ticketing counter, whichever way you see it. So unless you are getting your tickets, unless there's no queue, THEN dont buy your popcorn, nachos or any snacks over the counter at level 4!!! WHY? let the usher take away your ticket stub and you will be directed to the escalator one level up to storey5, with a snack only counter right there! No Queue!!!
And hey, if you are one of those who needs regular bladder relief, do so at AMK Hub's toilet before entering, Cathay's washroom are yet to be done up. Not too much an inconvenient if you are not late, because the public's restroom is just outside of the ticketing/snacks counter at level 4, somewhere near the Big SIgn "JACKPOT".
Cathay's decor are just as plush, at least not shabby. The threatre is tastefully decorated by crosses of red lights at the side and with red chairs(think some threatres has blue ones because on my way to Cathay, saw new, yet to be installed blue chairs). The chair is of CATHAY standards, that is if you know what, GOOD and comfy. I always think that Cathay has the best Chairs, followed by GV, then Eng Wah, lastly Shaw.
I'm over with the size of the chairs actually, but 2 of my 4 accompanying friends thought the chair was too small, rather funny since i was the biggest sized of them all. the cushioning was as good as other Cathays, but the chair, which was a little too long and tall for the back support, meant poor neck support if you are short or if you slough.
Thankfully the seats at placed far apart in between each row, so there's ample leg space. the steepness of the hall, means that if everyone sits straight, your head is still comfortably more than 1 head taller than the person in front. Well, that's a great thing if you sloughs, because you scan still view the whole screen with no obstruction
But personally, I thought the projector was not the best. Perhaps because I have been used to digital projectors which gives a clearer and sharper experience, it did not help that the movie in its attempt to reminisce the videos which looked old, added lotsa noise to it. But as the movie itself got clearer, the projection was still satisfactory. In fact as a heartlander threater, I think it is kinda good quality (except comparing with Eng Wah which gives its Heartland threaters digital projectors too).
For residents of Toa Payoh, Bishan, Ang Mo Kio and Yishun area, I would definitely recommend them to catch a movie at Cathay@AMK Hub because GV Bishan and Yishun are a little old, Eng Wah Jubilee is very old, Eng Wah Toa Payoh is little too too cold (But good for digital formats movies since GV doesn’t have).
Cathay@AMK Hub is cold, at least not chilling nor warm. I had no jacket on and had only after more than 1hour I felt a little cold on my limbs. Other than this, Thumbs up! So for a heartlander’s cinema threater, uh, this shall be my favourite in future!
