This movie is full of spectaculer visual effects, extraordinary costumes, funny characters and lines. Loosely it tells the true story of a battle in Ancient Greece where 300 Spartan warriors stood against a formidable army of invaders from Persia.
Much of the narrative of Spartan society is largely inaccurate, the author actually infused his own imaginative elements into the story. But the battle is true, it gives a clear explanation on how the Greek "Phalanx" works. Combined with geographical advantage, Spartans owned Persians in the battle.
The battle scenes are stylish, bear close resemblence to the original graphic novel. The actor who stars as King of Sparta - Leonidas, is perfect for the role. The audience can feel every word he shouts has some degree of madness in it. Xerxes in the movie is also amazing.
Some reviews gave the movie a very bad rating. They argued that the movie deeply insulted Persians, depicted Persians as bloodthirsty monsters.
But the fact is, although Persia is a great civilization with a lot of inventions of human wisdom, unfortunately most Persian Emporers such as Cyprus, Darius, and in the movie, Xerxes are conquerors who waged wars that destroyed lands and took lives. The movie is not wrong to depict them that way. It's just that some audience with different cultural background is abit oversensitive.
Some Americans think that the movie supports Bush's policy in Iraq. This also doesn't make much sense. Spartans fought for their freedom, while whether or not Americans are fighting for Iraqis' freedom is yet to be seen. On second thought, actually both Leonidas and Xerxes can represent Bush.
One reminder: 300 is definitely not suitable for children and teens under 18. It contains graphic violence and sensuality.
