Hong Kong tea restaurants have been popping out in every corners of Singapore, but only a few of them are worth mentioning. For most of the hong kong tea restaurants i visited, they are more disappointing than pleasing. So when my friends introduced me to this Wan Chai Hong Kong Tea Room, i was quite sceptical of the quality.
I was quite surprised to see that it's fully packed when we reached there, even though it's a friday night. And the queue was like quite long, that makes me think that either their food is really good or their service is just too slow. Nevertheless, the service is quite prompt, and the waitress have the initiatives to provide us the menu to decide what to eat while we are waiting. Though the queue is long, we didn't have to wait very long until we got to our seats, maybe around just 10 minutes or less.
As the name suggest, their milk tea is really good. Its rich and smooth, combining the tea's fragrance and the mild creamy taste of evaporated milk. The flavour of the milk tea is perfect, and it's not like the other milk tea you get from coffee shops and even other hong kong tea restaurants. I'll give 5 stars just for this milk tea alone.
The beef noodle is a replica of the wanton mee, replacing the wanton and char siew with beef. Nevertheless, the beef is tender and juicy, much to our delight. The noodles are nice also, but the soup is a tad too salty for our taste.
This is the curry baked rice i ordered. It's got curry gravy at the side and topped with a whole lot of cheese. It's a unique combination, but it tastes good nevertheless. The portion is quite big, with huge chunks of chicken meat, and together with the cheese, it makes quite a heavy meal.
Along with the curry baked rice is this herbal soup, which is fully of cooling ingredients. At first taste, it's a bit weird, maybe cos it's sweet instead of savoury. But i began to like it after a few more spoonns. It's a nice cooling side for the heaty curry baked rice.
The steamed chicken rice with mushroom and chinese sausage is a bit not very interesting, but tastes alright though. I would prefer that they would cut the sausage into smaller pieces. It tastes a bit 'plastic' in this big chunk. The chicken meat taste fresh and tender, that's all. But we'd prefer it to have more taste, probably more sauce or something. Oh, and it took quite long for them to serve up this dish. So if you're in a hurry, better not order this.
The dessert looks nice, it's yam paste with vanilla ice cream and sago. It doesn't look quite like what it is, yes.
The colour of the yam paste is too light, and it doesn't taste very right though, unlike the very sweet taste i expect it to be.
The aloe vera and soya beancurd is a refreshing dessert, tastes alright but normal.
While the other desserts doesn't taste as expected, this hot "six flavour soup". It's packed with lots of herbal goodies, tastes sweet and makes for a refreshing dessert after the heaty meal. 5 stars for the milk tea, 3 for the rest of the dishes.
