After a long and tiring week, I decided to reward myself with some good food. Of course, 'good food' is subjective. For me, I like steak so I decided to go to for some steak at Hog's Breath at Vivocity. Ever since I read about Hog's Breath from a friend's blog, I have been meaning to go there to give it a try.
I made a reservation and on Friday evening, went down to the place with my cousins. The place was packed! I was telling myself, thank goodness I made a reservation. Unfortunately, while the waiter at the door found my name on the reservation list, he could not find an empty table for me!
Now this kind of render the concept of "reservation" moot doesn't it?
Needless to say, we were far from impressed but I was really interested in the steak so I decided to give the place a chance. After wandering around for 5 minutes, I checked back and the friendly and apologetic waiter told me that they now have a table. Thankfully.
We were shown to our table and as we sat down, we observed that the place was really very packed. There was live singing and the male singer was doing a good job, nice vocal and it really made the atmosphere pretty good. But after we were seated for like a few minutes, still nobody brought us a menu!
Business is really good. So good that they have forgotten to serve us. In the end, we had to ask to be served. By now, one of my cousins was really starting to feel negative about this place. Me? I was still thinking about the steak (I'm a very focused person, haha).
We pored over the menu and I settled for the "Natural Prime Rib", opting for baked potato, salad and for the steak to be served with brown sauce, and the steak to be done medium rare. There is an option to order a 33% larger cut for $8 more but since this portion is already 300 grams (they claim), I was worried I would not be able to finish and so did not upsize. I also ordered Fish Chowder.
By the way, Hog's Breath serves ice water for free! And they automatically come over to refill the ice water. Now that is service. (Unlike the horrible establishment "2 Hot" at Vivocity, which leaves its customers to die of thirst if they don't order drinks)
Ice water, free and auto refill. Is it so hard to do, 2 Hot?!
Fish Chowder came and it was really nice. One of my cousins ordered Cream of Mushroom and it was pretty good too. The mushroom smell is really strong and he loves mushroom so he enjoyed it.
Fish Chowder... nice!
Cream of mushroom: Mushroom lovers will love the strong mushroom flavour.
Next up, the main course. Oooh the steak looks good! It is really cooked medium rare and so is really easy to chew, the way I like it. The steak is soft and really succulent but I must say the brown sauce is really important. And from the way my cousins were dipping fries, carrots and anything edible in my brown sauce, I would say my comment is justified! Haha.
Natural Prime Rib... Superbly done and nice to chew. The brown sauce makes it really tasty!
By this time, the reservation boo-boo was forgiven by all of us. The food is enjoyable and the live singing makes the atmosphere nice. We found that the portion is really large. Here we are three grown men and we had trouble finishing our food. Thank goodness I did not order the 33% larger cut! I would really have trouble finishing that! My only suggestion is that the baked potato could be served with sour cream, bacon bits and spring onions, the way they do it at Jack's Place. Baked potato on its own is a bit boring and bland. But anyway the steak was great and that was the most important thing for me.
When we left, there were 5 or 6 serving staff in one line near the doorway to greet us goodbye. It did leave us an even more favorable impression of Hog's Breath and I was glad that we did try out the place.
All in all, I spend about $42 on the meal. Pricey for a student but it is definitely worth the money. Steak lovers, please give it a try. The food alone should be worth the effort.
