Tong Heng Chinese confectionary has been around since the 1920, historically known for their yummy traditional pastries. There are a whole lot to select in this shop located in South Bridge Road. My favourites are golden yellow egg tarts, lotus seed paste and not forgetting lao po bing (round flat flaky crust pastry). History of the loa pao bing derives from an old folklore about a loyal wife who sold herself to slavery to raise $$$ to cure her elderly in-laws. To save her distraught wife, her husband made this pastry and sold it for her release. Ever since, lao po ping has symbolised true love and romance. Another sweet pastries are the Dragon Phoenix Cake, stuffed with lotus seed paste and the Harmony Crisps with Mixed Seeds . These are usually available in wedding. A must try for the lotus seed paste! Not too sweet and sticky. Mouth-watering fragrant paste.
